The Department of State updates its global wait-time information monthly. It is useful for comparing broad post and category estimates, but it does not show a guaranteed outcome for your case. For UAE applicants, start with the post on the official route and then check your own scheduling account after you have completed the required steps.
Four dates that should not be confused
| Stage | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Next available appointment | An estimate for when a qualifying interview slot may be available at that location. | A confirmed appointment for you. |
| Average wait | How long B1/B2 applicants typically waited in the prior month when the table reports it. | Today’s live availability or your predicted wait. |
| After-interview decision | The consular officer’s assessment of the individual application. | A consequence of receiving an early slot. |
| Passport return | The local collection or delivery step after issuance, if applicable. | Included in the appointment estimate. |
Administrative processing, when required, is also separate. The Department of State says its duration varies with individual circumstances and is not included in the published estimates. Do not book non-refundable travel based only on a table or an interview date.
What to do after you see the estimate
- Confirm the correct location. Applicants should normally schedule in their country of nationality or residence. UAE residence may be relevant to a UAE application, but follow current designated-post rules.
- Complete the application properly. A wait-time figure does not replace the DS-160, fee and scheduling steps described in our appointment guide.
- Book the first suitable regular slot. Once scheduled, check the official system for a permitted earlier opening instead of relying on third-party availability claims.
- Keep a timing buffer. Treat the confirmed interview as one milestone, not your departure date.
When is an expedited request different?
An expedited interview request is not a general solution for late travel. The Department of State describes urgent, unforeseen situations such as a funeral, medical emergency or school start date, and requires proof. It also says applicants must first submit the DS-160, pay the fee and book the first available regular interview. Read our emergency appointment guide before deciding whether your situation may qualify.
