What is a national visa or Type D visa?

It is a country-issued authorisation for a long stay, generally beyond 90 days. It is different from a short-stay Schengen visa. “Type D” is commonly used in Schengen systems, but each country defines its own work, study, family, research and other residence routes, eligibility and application process.

Which long-stay route fits the purpose?

The legal purpose must come first. A job offer may lead to an employment or highly qualified route; university admission to a student route; joining an eligible relative to family reunification. Self-employment, research and remote work may have distinct categories. One checklist cannot cover all of them.

Work

Contract, employer approvals and qualifications

Study

Admission, funding and insurance

Family

Relationship, sponsor status and accommodation

How does the process usually unfold?

Confirm the country and legal purpose, then use that authority’s current checklist and UAE jurisdiction rules. Prepare civil, financial and purpose evidence, including legalisation or translation where required. Complete the official appointment and biometrics process, then follow any post-arrival address registration or residence-card steps stated by the destination.

Official sources for long-stay routes

Europe national visa questions

These answers distinguish long-stay national permission from a Schengen visitor visa.

What is a European national visa?

A national or long-stay visa is issued under one country’s law for a stay generally exceeding 90 days, often for work, study, family or residence. Terminology differs by country.

Is a Type D visa valid for all of Europe?

No. It authorises the long stay in the issuing country. A valid long-stay visa or residence permit from a Schengen country may permit short travel in other Schengen countries, subject to conditions.

Can I use a Schengen tourist visa to relocate?

A short-stay Schengen visa is for visits within the 90-in-180-day framework. Long-term work, study, family or residence normally requires the destination’s national procedure.

What determines the required documents?

The destination, purpose, nationality, UAE residence and personal circumstances. A work route may depend on employment approval; study and family routes use different primary evidence.

Does DreamSphere provide immigration legal advice?

No. We provide private route and document support. Complex eligibility and legal interpretation should be handled by the destination authority or a licensed immigration professional.
